Once the conservation situation and the team’s in it are well resolved (Step 1), we move to developing plans: actions, monitoring and operations (Step 2)

  • A. Develop a formal action plan
    • define SMART Goals for each target to guide action
    • review the conceptual model and develop draft strategies for key intervention points
    • prioritize strategies against impact and feasibility
    •  test selected strategies using results chains to test logic and assumptions
    • develop for key intermediate results
  • B. Develop a formal monitoring plan
    • define audiences and key information needed
    • define indicators and methods
    • cost monitoring activities
  • C. Develop an Operational Plan
    • develop budgets including all activities
    • assess human, financial and other capacity and adjust as needed
    • document risk assessment and mitigation
    • assess lifespan and exit strategy

Having developed these plans, many projects use this information to publish a communication document often called as the ‘Management Plan’. This is a static document used to communicate with stakeholders.

The Open Standards, however, sees the ‘plan’ as a process, not an end-point, and uses such tools as Miradi and MiradiShare as planning, management and monitoring vehicles that ‘keep the plan alive’.

This process begins with implementation (Step 3) and continues with adaptation (Step 4) and sharing (Step 5).
